Ducks at Islanders [old-time hockey game thread]

Anaheim Ducks at New York Islanders, Jan 21, 2009 7:00 PM EST

Is it too late to call up Mitch Fritz? The Ducks are, per usual, near the top (bottom?) of the league for PIM/game, just behind Philadelphia (#2) and Vancouver (#1). They like them some old-time hockey, eh -- a remnant of the Brian Burke Era. Let's hope Tim Jackman puts on the foil, because his teammates are going to be pushed around a bit. Witter may be called to duty in this one, too: I suppose that's a system he can get behind.

Duck blog of choice (follow their blogroll for more): Battle of California

Garth Snow passed on claiming Dany Sabourin today, which is just as well. Pittsburgh dumped Sabourin for a reason, and no point adding someone who lacks both our confidence and our nostalgia. We now get to see what Yann Danis can do, until the Islanders' goalie injury curse befalls him.

Speaking of injuries, Greg Logan has a thorough round-up of the Rick DiPietro saga this season, from summer surgery and Scott Gordon's thinking then, to what went into DP's final road trip out West, where he finally cried "Uncle." It's the definitive wrap-up of how we got here, and it also includes Gordon's frank thoughts on Danis.

Tomorrow, I'll dust off my Caribbean online medical degree and ponder what the future holds for our 27-year-old patient. For now, it's the last game before the All-Star break: enjoy a little game thread if you dare.

Small wishes

I would like to enter the All-Star break without seeing “30” under the Islanders’ loss column. It is a humble wish, but one that would provide some silly comfort.

Jaffe on Getzlaf:

“If he were in the Eastern time zone, he’d be considered one of the top-five players in the NHL — and marketable as well. … tough kid, great set of hands, wicked wrist shot, relishes that he is now one of the leasers of this team.”

Randy Carlyle's nickname

“Kitty” Carlyle — after an old actress. Never knew or heard that before. I remember Carlyle as a Penguin and Jet player, and there’s no way I’d call him that to his face.

Okay, I take it all back about them putting him on the point on the PP. It’s cool, it’s cool.

Hat-tip to Giguere for not covering down low on the inside post.

I’m only watching the boxscore here at work, but that’s sounding way too typical for the guy. Is there any way the Ducks can leave him in Montreal after the ASG ends?

Eek. The Isles announcers were saying they’d heard that about him, that he’s not quick on those and maybe hip surgeries were taking their toll. (Hip surgeries, now where have I heard that before…?)

Bret Hedican, still tickin'. Nice.

Hedican was once acquired with Jeff Brown for future Islander Craig Janney, as part of Janney’s career trade value spiral that went something like (if memory serves):

Adam Oates > Petr Nedved > Jeff Brown/Bret Hedican > Darren Turcotte > Loui DeBrusk > the 6th-round pick the Isles used to rent him.

Which is another way of saying, if one day you’re worth Adam Oates (not really), and a few years later you’re worth Louis DeBrusk, something has gone amiss. Age was a factor, but his descent was rapid and ugly.

Kurtis McLean! 2-0

Alright now that is truly awesome. You’re 28, you make your unheard of NHL debut (a D-III product no less), and the next game you score your first goal on a slapshot against a former Conn Smythe winner. I mean, you’ll never tire of telling that story at the bar, right?

(You obviously omit the goalie-shoulda-had-it, my-team-was-in-30th-place part.)

In Giguere’s defense, the puck was wobbling when The Rookie shot it, and it looked like it knuckled or dipped a bit. Boy was he pissed to be pulled already.

Or maybe he’s just preparing Giguere for that one-period hook he’ll get in the ASG.

End of 1st: 2-0 ... *Islanders* (!)

Wow. I mean, all credit to J.S., but competent period there from the Isles.

At this point I’m past talking myself into how the Isles might steal a given game; I’m just content to expect the worst and then be surprised by the occasional string of good periods. So here’s one good period.

Seven minutes in, all Ducks — except for two excellent odd-man counterattack chances by the Isles, one-missed, one stopped by Jonas H.

Yeah, usually when they fall behind by multiple goals they will make a game of things — at least until things are tied again.

Then they’ll find a new-and-creative way to lose all over again (sigh).

If the Ducks tie, they’re going to have to get really freaking creative to find a way to lose it. Like O’Byrne-level creative.

Hey!

1st period good — partly due to J.S. Giguere revealing two holes, partly due to the breakout working nicely.

2nd period all Ducks — but they haven’t [jinx jinx jinx no jinx] scored yet.

Oh, and McLean got his 1st NHL goal! On a slapshot. Which got J.S. pulled.

They interviewed McLean between periods

Very thrilled, obviously. Said he’d be giving the puck to his dad, the whole “all they’ve done for me” bit. (they=parents). That’s got to be sweet.

When he scored, he jumped on the glass, and there was eye contact with a Dubie-resembling fan who clearly knew what the moment meant.

I think he’s looked more solid the last two-three games. The thing that’s bugged me is soft goals, and mishandling the puck away from the net.

But if he has confidence issues, I’d certainly think Gordon’s refusal to use him earlier this season was a factor.

Lighthouse Hockey: an SB Nation New York Islanders blog with hip issues.

there's definitely been some of that, I agree

but on the whole he’s been about as good as can be expected. Even since he’s gotten in the games, I can’t imagine Gordon has inspired much confidence.

Gordon with other goalies. Because stats/career-wise, Gordon was no all-star. Yet the margin at this level has to be very narrow.
