Islanders at Flyers on Versus [game thread]

New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers, Dec 9, 2008 7:00 PM EST

New York Islanders (10-13-2) at Philadelphia Flyers (12-7-6)

7 p.m. EST | [cable or bank spectrum] Center | VERSUS (Vs? v.?)

Flyers blog: Flyers Goal Scored By...

Seems like recent opponents all have more OT losses than the Isles. Not sure what that means (voice: "Nothing."). Everyone in the East outside the three NY-area teams has more than 2 OTLs, though.

If you missed it, Sutton has caught the Thompson Flu. Towering Mitch Fritz is in along with emergency Bridgeport call-up D Joe Callahan.

this is annoying

NHL Center Ice isn’t carrying the game because it’s on Versus, which I don’t get. boooo

Oh noo!

I hate that maneuver. I was in that situation a couple seasons ago, where it seemed the Isles had an inordinate amount on Versus. Why can’t Center Ice carry Versus in that situation? Only cable tycoons know.

Goalies: Danis v. Biron

Very glad they’re putting Danis in. No sense running MacDonald out there every game like DiPietro.

Biron has won 8 straight against the Isles.

Announcers on SH goals

It’s been funny to hear every opposing/neutral announcer cite the Islanders’ 6 SH goals this season, because they haven’t scored shorthanded in what feels like a month.

Crap call on Fritz

“Holding,” when Cole just pinned his stick/arm to the boards. Announcers say Fritz is so big “he just looks like a walking penalty,” and I’m starting to wonder if the refs think that, too. They call minors on him like they don’t know how to read him.

Isles PP

And they start off working the puck around the Flyers zone — wow, already progress over last night.

Isles PP goal!

Andy Hilbert on a great redirection off Campoli’s smart pass. Hilbert, goal machine this year (his 7th).

I'm a Caps fan

that just enjoy seeing the Flyers beat. With the Caps on a night off, I guess Go Isles!

Isles goal! 2-0 (Weight)

Whew, a scramble where we should have scored, but it started to look like we wouldn’t. Weight bangs home the third attempt, and he’s now 5 points away from 1000.

Flyers goal, 2-1

Ack. Cote just obliterates Sim behind the net, and ol’ friend Aaron Asham puts it top corner from the slot.

Pelle Lindbergh

Man, was trolling through the Flyers site for material to have fun with, and came across a Pelle Lindbergh tribute. That always brings the room down. Tough to get in the snarky spirit when you see that. Haunting tragedy.

Doug Weight

He looks rejuvenated to me. He made no impact on the Ducks last year.

Yeah, he’s rejuvenated alright. He kind of got shafted last year. He came back to the Blues with an understanding they’d rebuild with him, and got a no-trade clause. Then during the season they approached him once, twice, and finally said “if you don’t take a trade, you may be on the fourth line or press box.”

So he goes from 20 minutes in STL to role undefined in ANA. I thought that was it for him, but Guerin seems to have coaxed him into a good spot.

I'm a Caps fan so I like Brendan Witt

Agreed. Witt’s seemed a little out of sorts since he came back from a knee injury. Knowing Witt, he probably came back too early (it was a knee on knee bend-the-wrong way collision, but they never said what the medical damage was). He hasn’t looked comfortable, skating-wise to me.

It’s funny, I’m from St. Louis, so I still think of Witt as one of the picks the Blues gave up for Scott Stevens.

Heh

Talk about a strange twist of fate! Between Stevens, those five picks (I think Gonchar was the other one that panned out?), Shanahan. Have to wonder how the ‘90s would’ve been different with Stevens as a Capital.

Oates, Bondra, Hunter, Kolzig, Gonchar

and Stevens. We would have gone to another Cup Finals maybe, but it would have been the same result to Detroit probably.

The expected fight happens: Cote v. Fritz

It’s really bizarre watching someone fight Fritz. Cote eventually pulled him in close, because otherwise the reach advantage is just too ridiculous. It’s like wrestling Andre the Giant out there.

Incidentally, they each bloodied an eye.

Free agent busts

Versus panel is discussing free agent busts.

Funny that Jones chooses Huet, who plays for the team Olczyk announces for (thus, awkwardness avoided).

Olczyk goes with Avery, an obvious pick given circumstances.

The Hair of Englom goes with Brendan Morrison in ANA. Funny, I wouldn’t have guess who’d be worse — Morrison or Naslund — but clearly Naslund is having a decent year.

Wonder if Anaheim would like to have Doug Weight instead? :) I know I was much more ready for the gamble on Weight than I would have been for Morrison.

Game over, Flyers win 4-3

I’m still pissed about the Witt penalty. Isles should’ve killed it off, but still. Last-place fans need everything we can get.

“In the end, cream rose to the top” (Reagh) my arse. This was just a close game. Eight minutes ago he was talking how “amazing” the Islanders are on 2nd nights of back-to-backs (winning six … until tonight). Just frustration is all.

Well, I wanted at least a strong effort on the national telecast, and they gave that. But we’re headed for a trench in the standings, fast.
