Vancouver Canucks at New York Islanders, Nov 17, 2008 7:00 PM EST

Vancouver Canucks (10-6-1) at New York Islanders (6-9-2)

7 p.m. EST | Nassau Coliseum | MSG+

Canucks blogs: Vancouver Canucks Hockey Blog | Canucks Hockey Blog | Canucks & Beyond

No late-breaking news I'm aware of since the preview. Some "keys to the game" from the 'nuck perspective are at Vancouver Canucks H.B. For the Canucks, this begins one of those lovely transcontinental road trips that Western teams must constantly endure. Here' s hoping they look past the Isles and get "overspeed(ed)" to MSG.

Interesting link buried in Chris Botta's Q&As from the weekend: Kovalchuk elbowing Thomas Pock (as a Ranger) in March 2007. I share this not to imply Pock didn't deserve suspension; rather to highlight that the NHL's disciplinary can't-even-call-it-a-policy remains a mysterious, case-by-case shell game clouded by victim's market and notoriety, TV coverage, perpetrator's value to his team, and an ever-evolving standard of player behavior. Gee, wouldn't a transparent and clearly delineated policy, standard, and decision-making process be nice?

Cripes

Canucks 2-on-1 to open the game, followed by the most Nascar-iffic net collision I’ve ever seen. Looked like Andy Hilbert took it out like a blocking dummy, right as Ryan Kesler happened to be skating behind it. Both are a wee bit shaken up.

Canucks 1-0

Hideous turnover leads to a goal 0:49 in by Pavol “millions” Demitra.

They called Demitra “Pavol Millions” back in St. Louis, because when teammates would ask him how much he made, he’d say “I make two millions” or “three millions,” depending on his deal at the time.

Gordon

was furious after the goal. Can’t blame him

Yeah, that was just a hideous first minute.

Something's not rotten in the state of Denmark

For the first time, two born-and-raised Danes are facing each other in the NHL. Isles center (and Danish pioneer) Frans Nielsen is joined now by Canucks winger Jannik Hansen. If you know a Dane, give him a fist bump, and tell him/her what a slapshot is.

Quick fight

Tim Jackman and former Isle-for-a-minute Rob Davison have a go. Jackman ends up on top, but also skates away with the shaving cut on his nose.

Bergenheim-Weight-Guerin

They may not be lighting up the scoring sheet (who is?), but I do enjoy them together when all three are skating hard.

End of 1st

Canucks up 1-0 on the early mistake. Then things leveled out a bit; Islanders getting better, but still not nearly enough pressure (nor shots).

Sedin twins

CJ Papa interviews the pretty one (Daniel, I think … I kid) during intermission. Something about “work hard” and such… It’s an interesting case with them, facing unrestricted free agency this summer. Canucks fans have to be nervous: As the clock ticks along, they get closer to a massive double payday from anyone with the cap win.

Nice story on the second Dane

On Janik Hansen, including this lovely quote from teammate Alex Burrows:

“He fits in perfectly with us. But it’s weird, he’s from Denmark,” Alex Burrows said. “You would think a player from Denmark would be soft, you might think they wouldn’t compete hard. But you’d be so wrong. He’s hard nosed. He’s got a lot of speed and he has a lot of skills and he works so hard. He just loves going in the corners.”

Ah, Cherry Europhobia is alive and well!

Awesome shift!

Man, first Martinek pinching in to set up a near tap-in, then great forechecking creates two one-timers from the slot, forcing an Islanders powerplay.

Islander goal!

Nice, shot from the point (Weight) with Hunter screening Luongo on the PP. Nice view of Weight turning to the bench first to celebrate.

End of 2nd, 1-1

Alright, lookin’ OK. Showing they can force some turnovers, create some pressure. They’ve got to contain the Sedins-Demitra line, though. That was getting a little scary there.

And the third is underway

Isles kill off the end of the Okposo penalty — with the help of a goalpost.

Mmm...rough call

Campoli had position going back toward MacDonald … once the puck’s out of the way, it looked like Hansen grabbed Campoli’s stick to help sell a call as he went down. Don’t feel like the ref who called that had a good enough angle to tell. But Campoli got his stick up under the hands.

Anyway, dangerous Canucks PP with 8 min. to go

Killed off, and now it’s the Isles’ turn for a PP as Frans Nielsen is taken down breaking down the right wing.
